Confucius was born in the year 550 b.c. in the land of Lu, in a small village, situated in the western part of the modern province of Shantung. His name was K'ung Ch'iu, and his style (corresponding to our Christian name) was Chung-ni. His countrymen speak of him as K'ung Fu-tzu, the Master, or philosopher K'ung. This expression was altered into Confucius by the Jesuit missionaries who first carried his fame to Europe.

Confucius, literally "Master Kong" was a Chinese thinker and social philosopher, whose teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese thought and life.

His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Legalism or Taoism during the Han Dynasty.Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism. It was introduced to Europe by the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci, who was the first to Latinise the name as "Confucius."

His teachings may be found in the Analects of Confucius a collection of "brief aphoristic fragments", which was compiled many years after his death. For nearly 2,000 years he was thought to be the editor or author of all the Five Classics such as the Classic of Rites, and the Spring and Autumn Annals

Kong Qiu, as Confucius is commonly known, is a combination of his surname and his given name, and he was also known as Zhong Ni, which is his courtesy name. He was born in 551 BCE in the Lu state (This state was in the south of modern-day Shandong Province) in the later days of the Spring and Autumn Period. Confucius was from a warrior family. His father Shulianghe was a famous warrior who had military exploits in two battles and owned a fiefdom. Confucius lost his father when he was three years old, and then his mother Yan Zhengzai took him and left the fiefdom because as a concubine , she wanted to avoid mistreatment from Shulianghe's formal wife. Thus, Confucius lived in poverty with his mother since childhood. With the support and encouragement of his mother, Confucius was very diligent in his studies. When Confucius was seventeen years old, his mother died as a result of illness and overwork. Three years later, Confucius married a young woman who was from the Qiguan family of the Song state. Though he had a mild tempered wife who loved him, he left his family to strive for his ideals. Confucius sought to revive the perfect virtue of Huaxia (Chinese civilization) and the classical properties of the Western Zhou Dynasty to build a great, harmonious and humanistic society.

not what we expected but OK
Was interesting
this is an enlightening book one that could change many peoples way of life if it were read.
I received this wonderful little book as a freebie but I would have paid for it because I love Confucius. Easy to read. I love getting little books like this for free on my .
This book consists of a series of conversations by Confucius with someone else...a loose dialog...one after the other. I was expecting words of wisdom expressed in English with a philosophical meaning...without having to dig it out of a dialog that meant little to me. I was not enough of a scholar to get anything from it.
Very good read but like many aspects of Confucius, you have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate (or even understand) what he's saying. I've been studying Chinese culture for many years and even I have to step back and take breath sometimes. Still, in today's hectic world? It's a good break and puts you in a different state. It's also a free download on 's , so definitely get it.
I'd say this was enlightening, illuminating and just plain wise. Confucius was definitely a man ahead of his time when it came to philosophy.

Unfortunately, philosophy can be extremely dry, and this collection of sayings proves to be more for someone who is intellectually interested in what Confucius said than for someone who wants an enjoyable read. I found it tolerable in small doses, but like other books I've read involving Zen, this book just didn't hold my interest. There are some very wise things being said, but the bulk of the words are dry exposition and they often obscure the wisdom hidden within.
I am still reading this book on my kindle and find it every intersting. I have heard the "Confucius said" all my life but never really knew much about him. This book tells about his life, his students and the things the Master taught his students. I would recomend it for all who are interrested in the religion he taught as well as his belief.
