Cleopatra, was the last active pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. Cleopatra originally ruled jointly with her father, Ptolemy XII Auletes, and later with her brothers, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, whom she married as per Egyptian custom, but eventually she became sole ruler. As pharaoh, she consummated a liaison with Julius Caesar that solidified her grip on the throne. She later elevated her son with Caesar, Caesarion, to co-ruler in name.
After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, she aligned with Mark Antony in opposition to Caesar's legal heir, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (later known as Augustus). With Antony, she bore the twins Cleopatra Selene II and Alexander Helios, and another son, Ptolemy Philadelphus (her unions with her brothers had produced no children). After losing the Battle of Actium to Octavian's forces, Antony committed suicide. Cleopatra followed suit, according to tradition killing herself by means of an asp bite on August 12, 30 BC. She was briefly outlived by Caesarion, who was declared pharaoh by his supporters but soon killed on Octavian's orders. Egypt became the Roman province of Aegyptus.

Before reading this book, I had no idea about the extent of cruelty, crime and incest that went on during the Ptolemies dynasty in the kingdom of Egypt. I also didn’t know that there were numerous women of royal blood who were given the name Cleopatra. This is a wonderful biography of the Great Cleopatra and it includes many interesting facts during that period of history. I learned a lot reading this book. It is well-researched and extremely informative about her life.Product details

Cleopatra eBook Jacob Abbott Reviews
So when I get a book on Cleopatra, I actually want to be reading about her. 10% of the way in, and I get a lecture on incest. Still no Cleopatra. I really didn't need the author's religious views and boring writing, I wanted to learn about Cleopatra.,
Pity.

The infamous Cleopatra was Egyptian royalty by birth, but Macedonian by blood. Using that viewpoint on this queen's life, Jacob Abbott brings you his own view of this woman who dallied with Romans so that even Shakespeare wrote about her affair with Marc Antony. This is a short biography which gives a fine overview of a complicated and intriguing subject. Like many ancient women of note, she inspired men to mad choices and changed the shape of the world. If you enjoy this book, let Cleopatra lead you into Ancient Egypt at a time when Rome ruled the world and treachery abounded. There's much to learn, and no better place to start.
Cleopatra, by Jacob Abbot, was originally published in 1851 as "History of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt." The edition that I just finished reading was published in 2017 by Enhanced Media. (All rights reserved.)
Although the prose was somewhat old-fashioned, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book !! The author set the stage for the book by explaining the nature of the Nile and how this had led to Egypt developing such an advanced culture and civilization. He also described the political atmosphere of the times. (N.B. Modern day politics are mild compared to those existing during the time of Caesar, Cleopatra, and Mark Antony !!).
Also, I learned from this book - I never before knew that Cleopatra may have had ancestors who were Greek as well as Egyptian, and I never knew that Cleopatra had had a relationship with Caesar before her relationship with Mark Antony.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to those persons interested in this period of history.
Interesting and captivating recount of early Egypt into a great nation and how greed, sex and power formed the childhood and development of royal families.
I love delving back into ancient Egyptian history, and let's face it - Cleopatra was Queen of them all. Whilst the language is a little bit flowery in parts, it's wonderful to whisked back in time so thoroughly and completely. All credit to Jacob Abbott who must have spent years putting this volume together.
